Internet Provider Comparison Checklist

Use this checklist when comparing internet providers to ensure you're making an apples-to-apples comparison.

  1. Actual speed, not advertised speed — "Up to 1 Gbps" means the maximum. Ask for typical speeds.
  2. Upload speed — Often much slower than download on cable connections. Critical for video calls and uploads.
  3. Data caps — Does the plan include unlimited data? What's the overage charge if you exceed the cap?
  4. Contract length — Month-to-month or annual? What's the early termination fee?
  5. Promotional pricing — What's the price after the promotional period ends?
  6. Equipment fees — Monthly modem/router rental fee? Or can you use your own equipment?
  7. Installation cost — Is professional installation required? What does it cost?
  8. Reliability — Check outage reports and customer reviews for your specific area.
  9. Customer service — Check JD Power scores and online reviews for support quality.
  10. Bundle options — Is adding TV or phone service cheaper than your current setup?
