Internet Connection Types Compared

The type of internet connection available at your address is largely determined by your location and what infrastructure providers have built in your area.

Fiber-Optic

Fastest, most reliable, symmetrical speeds. Available from AT&T, Verizon, Frontier, and others. Best choice when available.

Cable

Fast and widely available. Speeds of 100–2,000 Mbps. Shared infrastructure can cause evening slowdowns. Available from Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox, Optimum.

DSL

Uses phone lines. Slower (10–100 Mbps typical) but widely available. Unaffected by neighborhood congestion. Offered by AT&T, CenturyLink, Frontier.

Satellite

Available everywhere. Starlink offers 100–220 Mbps with low latency. Traditional satellite (HughesNet, Viasat) is slow with high latency. Best for rural areas with no other options.

Fixed Wireless

Uses 4G/5G towers to deliver home internet. T-Mobile and Verizon offer competitive fixed wireless plans at $50/month with no contracts.
