Choosing the Right Internet Plan

The most common mistake people make when choosing an internet plan is either overpaying for speed they don't need or underpaying for a plan too slow for their household.

Step 1: Count Your Devices

Every connected device uses bandwidth. Count smartphones, computers, tablets, smart TVs, game consoles, and smart home devices. A family of 4 with multiple streaming devices likely has 15–25 active devices.

Step 2: Identify Your Heaviest Use

4K streaming uses 25 Mbps per stream. Video conferencing uses 3–5 Mbps. Gaming downloads use burst capacity. Multiply your peak simultaneous uses to get your minimum speed requirement.

Step 3: Add a Buffer

Always add 50–100% to your calculated minimum for future-proofing and overhead. If you calculated 100 Mbps needed, choose a 200 Mbps plan.

Step 4: Check Contract Terms

Promotional pricing often ends after 12 months. Understand what you'll pay after the promo and whether there's an early termination fee.
